ON NE PASSE PAS for tenor and piano (1917)
The poem On ne passe pas, written by Elisabeth Diepenbrock-de Jong van Beek en Donk under the pseudonym "Victor le Jeune, Soldat au front" (jeune FR = jong NL), is a typical occasional poem. In simple terms it describes the indomitability of King Albert of Belgium, and his people's solidarity with him. The battle cry "On ne passe pas" has been derived from "Ils ne passeront pas!" – a slogan introduced by general Robert Nivelle, in the German Verdun offensive in 1916. As "¡No paseran!" it was still used by many rebellious movements in the later twentieth century.
The song was composed on 7 March 1917, and already on 24 March it was printed in the hand of a copyist as an insert in De Nieuwe Amsterdammer (an Amsterdam periodical).
